Winnipeg Jets forward Shawn Matthias will miss the remainder of the season. The 29-year old will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.
His injury will keep him off the ice for months, and is expected to complete extensive rehabilitation during that time.

Jets’ Matthias Out for Season due to Shoulder Surgery
Matthias played a total of 45 games with the Jets this season. He managed to tally a total of 12 points throughout his 2016-2017 campaign. He inked a two-year deal worth $4.25 million this past summer. Unfortunately, he was forced to miss 25 games after being sidelined by a lower body injury.
Matthias was the Detroit Red Wings second round selection in the 2006 NHL Draft, and is an experienced forward with 10 season’s under his belt. Throughout this span, Matthias has amassed 97 points over 312 career games in the NHL.
Matthias’ Season Halted Twice
Jets head coach Paul Maurice was quick to sign away Matthias’ role, noting in a press conference that “Andrew Copp will come in…Shawn’s absence.” Matthias, a left winger, spent most of the season playing alongside Adam Lowry at centre and Joel Armia on the opposite wing. “He is playing with two young guys, with [Joel] Armia and [Adam] Lowry, and I think he helped them in a lot of ways, trying to define that game, that offensive-zone pressure game, the physical game”
Weighing in at 225 pounds, Shawn Matthias provided Winnipeg with a sense of physicality on the front end. No doubt that the Jets had been hoping to see more of Matthias’ presence on ice this season.
On the other hand, Winnipeg has endured a few notable players to injuries. Players such as Tyler Myers, Tobias Enstrom, and Jacob Trouba have been sidelined from play. Now joining the Jets injury island is Shawn Matthias, who will see his season endure yet another lengthy halt.
