In true Wayne Gretzky fashion, in a game where Jagr was within shooting distance of Messier’s spot the ageless wonder struck with three assists to surprise the home crowd.

Jagr sits with 755 goals and 1132 assists in 1662 games played across 24 seasons. Jagr was originally drafted fifth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990 and debuted that same year. He won his two, and so far only, Stanley Cups in his second and third seasons alongside fellow legend, Mario Lemieux.

Jagr, 44, will, likely, within the next few games take over sole possession of the second most points ever scored in the NHL.

In 2008 it seemed like Jagr’s time in the NHL had come to an end as he signed a contract in the KHL. Three years and 145 KHL points later, however, he returned to North America and continued his rise up the all time lists. At 44 Jagr still seems to have the skill to keep up with the rest of the league as he currently sits with a solid 19 points in 33 games.

In addition to his time in the KHL, Jagr has, in his career, suffered through one full lockout as well as two lockout-shortened seasons and likely would be well into the 2000s in points had he played those years.

The next record Jagr could have his sights on is Gordie Howe‘s all time games played record. That record currently stands at 1767 games. If Jagr plays through the end of this season, as well as next year and misses 25 games or less he will pass that mark.
