New York Islanders sign Cal Clutterbuck to 5-Year Extension

The New York Islanders announced a new five-year contract extensions with forward Cal Clutterbuck on Friday. While the team didn’t announce the financial details of the contract, it has been widely reported as a $17.5 million deal ($3.5 million AAV). The deal will begin on July 1st, 2017. The 29-year-old Clutterbuck was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

Clutterbuck was named an alternate captain for the Islanders this past summer. He has two goals and seven assists for nine points in 25 games so fart this season. Clutterbuck is known as one of the most frequent and hardest hitters in the NHL, often playing on a bottom line for the Islanders. He was acquired from the Minnesota Wild in a trade made at the 2013 NHL Draft.  The Islanders sent Nino Niederreiter back to the Wild in the transaction.

Clutterbuck had 15 goals and eight assists for 23 points and 288 hits in 77 games with the Islanders last season. He added two goals and an assist in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help New York advance to the second round, defeating the Florida Panthers along the way.

In 597 career NHL games, over nine seasons, with the Islanders and Wild, Clutterbuck has scored 98 goals and 79 assists for 177 career point. He has added five goals and three assists for eight points in 23 career playoff games.
