Report: New York Islanders Agree to Terms with Dennis Seidenberg

Reports indicate that the New York Islanders have agreed to sign defenceman Dennis Seidenberg to a one-year contract, worth $1 million after he is finished representing Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.  The 35-year-old blue-liner formerly played for the Boston Bruins, before his contract was abruptly bought out this summer.  Seidenberg had two seasons remaining on the contract with a cap hit of $4 million.

According to Pierre Lebrun, they were eight or nine other teams interested in Seidenberg, who has been impressive during the World Cup tournament. Each wanted to wait until the tournaments conclusion before talking with him. Seidenberg, however, was not looking to wait and took his first offer with the Isles. Seidenberg is expected to play in a bottom defensive pairing, helping add depth to the Islanders defensive corps.

Due to injury last season, Seidenberg was limited to 61 games.  He scored one goal, added 11 assists, had a minus one rating, 24 minutes in penalties, and his average ice time dipped below 20 minutes for the first time since 2007-08, when he was a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.  Seidenberg is a veteran player with plenty of postseason experience. This includes a Stanley Cup Championship in 2011 when the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks.  Over the course of his career, he has played in 758 games, scoring 39 goals, 185 assists (224 points total), while having a plus 23 plus/minus record and a total of 310 penalty minutes.  He rejoins fellow former Bruin defenceman Johnny Boychuk on the Islanders.
