Corey Perry Replaces Jeff Carter For Team Canada, Vincent Trocheck replaces Sean Monahan on U23s

With World Cup training camp just a few days away, Canada has made a change to their final roster. Corey Perry will be replacing an injured Jeff Carter. This is the third change that the team has been forced to make due to injury.

Corey Perry Named To Team Canada

Perry most recently captained Canada to a gold medal at the 2016 IIHF World Championship last May. He contributed with four goals and five assists in 10 games.

The gold medal win allowed Perry to be entered into the Triple Gold Club. He is one of only eight active players to have won Olympic Gold, World Championship gold and a Stanley Cup championship. Perry is also just the second player to combine his Triple Gold membership with a gold-medal win at the IIHF World Juniors and a Memorial Cup.

“We’re fortunate and excited to welcome Corey Perry to the team.” Doug Armstrong, general manager for Team Canada, said. “He is coming off a gold-medal win with Team Canada at worlds, and his career accomplishments in the NHL and in international competition speak for themselves. He’ll be a great addition to the team.”

This addition to Canada gives the team more depth at the forward position. While Carter is a natural centre, he likely would have ended up playing on the wing. As a natural right winger, this gives Perry a better chance to excel in his position.

The team also isn’t losing much in terms of scoring ability. Carter played in 77 games with 24 goals and 62 points. In 82 games, Perry scored 32 goals and also finished with 62 points.

Team Canada is set to begin training camp in Ottawa on September 5. Canada will then see their first pre-tournament action on September 9 when they take on the rival Team USA squad.

Monahan Out, Trocheck In

The team North America 23 and Under squad also made a change today. Out is Calgary Flames centre Sean Monahanand in is Florida Panthers Vincent Trocheck.

Trocheck is coming off a break-out year where he scored 25 goals and 28 assists for a total of 53 points in his first full season in the NHL. The 25 goals where a career high for the young forward and had him tied for third among the Panthers. His 53 points were good for fifth and also a career high.

Trocheck has spent his career with the Panthers, who drafted him during the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He was also part of the 2013 USA team that took gold in the 2013 World Junior Championships. He contributed with three goals and three assists in six games.

Since 2013, Trocheck has played in 146 games, putting up 37 goals and totaling 83 points. His season was cut short this past year when a foot injury caused him to miss the rest of the season after playing in 76 games. His play drew praise from teammate Jaromir Jagr.

“He was our best player for a long time,” Jagr said about the forward. “It’s tough. Not only we lost this game, we lost our best player.”
