Jordy Bellerive, Ryan Vandervlis and Matt Alfaro Injured in Fire
The Hurricanes released a statement about the incident and will make more details known as they become available. The team asked for privacy on behalf of the families, players and organization.
Bellerive signed to a three-year, entry-level deal before the start of the 2017-18 season. The undrafted North Vancouver, British Columbia native earned a contract after a great showing in September’s rookie tournament.
The 5-foot-11, 194-pound prospect made great strides this season as he led the Hurricanes with 46 goals and 46 assists for 92 points in 71 WHL games. Bellerive is a “blue chip prospect” by The Athletic’s prospect guru Jesse Marshall. Bellerive played in one preseason game for the Penguins where he generated one shot and had one penalty.
Vandervlis completed his last season with the team and Alfaro played with the University of Calgary after completing his over-age season with the Hurricanes. Vandervlis tallied 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points with Lethbridge.
What It Means for the Future
Bellerive was drawing a lot of buzz from Penguins fans. This is because of his big leap from an 11 goals, 25 assists, 36 points season in 2016-17 and one wonders how much more improvement he would show in 2018-19. Bellerive is an exciting prospect that has a bright future ahead of him.
Let’s hope all three of the players make a speedy recovery from these injuries.
