Jordan Eberle Traded to the New York Islanders

The Edmonton Oilers have finally pulled the trigger and have traded winger Jordan Eberle to the Islanders in exchange for Ryan Strome. Eberle has been a name that has been speculated in trade talk for a couple of seasons now and the Oilers have finally made their move. Neither team is retaining salary, as Eberle, 27, has two years and $6 million remaining on his deal while Strome, soon-to-be 24, has one year remaining at $2.5 million. Eberle has been a member of the Oilers franchise since 2008 when he was drafted 22nd overall by the club.

Eberle’s career thus far has been quite excellent. When he is healthy, the forward can put up significant numbers on the scoresheet. Eberle has had four 50-plus point seasons and in his career has skated in 507 games, tallying 165 career goals, 217 assists for a total of 382 total career points. This season, Eberle fought it early on, but still racked up 20 goals and 51 points in 82 games played. It was his fifth 20-goal season already.

However, he struggled greatly in the playoffs. Eberle was held without a goal, and picked up just two assists in 13 games as the Oilers were eliminated in the second round by the Anaheim Ducks. For a player with a prolific junior record of scoring in big games, his disappearance during his first trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs was extremely disappointing. Rumors of Eberle leaving Edmonton have been swirling since the elimination.

Eberle brought in a good piece for the Isles in Strome. He will be looking to find a consistent role with the Oilers after two years of regression since his 17-goal, 50-point season in 2014-15. He’s scored 21 goals and 51 points total in 140 games since, and was demoted to the AHL in 2015-16 to work on his game. He’ll be in a nice fold with Edmonton as the reigning MVP Connor McDavid and breakout star Leon Draisaitl will be able to get him the puck and possibly rejuvenate him. As for Eberle, he will be looking to find his scoring touch again and get back to the days of being known as a top-line winger and key offensive contributor. He’s paid as such, after all.
