Who is Brandon Smith?
At first fans may confuse early-signee Brandon Smith with former Penn State linebacker and Penn State wrestler Brandon Smith. The difference is, this Brandon Smith is a five star inside linebacker out of Louisa County in Virginia. Further, according to 247Sports Smith is the number one player out of Virginia, the number two inside linebacker, and ranked 25th in the nation overall. He is 6 ft. 4 in. and currently weighs 223 lbs. According to Rivals, Smith had offers from 25 schools, including Alabama, Clemson, and Michigan. Smith committed to Penn State since May 21, 2018.
Defensive coordinator Brent Pry has a lot to build off of with Smith. He has broad shoulders and long arms. In addition, he currently weighs 223 lbs. Smith will have to bulk up and add mass, but that should not be a problem before the start of the 2019 season. Smith will be a much needed addition to the linebacker group, and will compliment outside linebacker Micah Parsons well. The group is poised to have a good year, with Parsons and Jesse Luketa entering their sophomore season, and Cam Brown returning. Finally, with the impending transfer of Brelin Faison-Waldon, look for Smith to make an impact in his freshman season.
