UCLA Signs Quarterback Chase Griffin

As expected, UCLA has officially signed Chase Griffin, a 5-10, 186-pound quarterback out of Hutto Texas. Griffin is a three-star recruit, per the 247Sports composite. He had four other offers, aside from UCLA; Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Dartmouth.

Griffin was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas in 2018, after throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 51 touchdowns in his senior season at Hutto High School. For his career, Griffin had 11.245 passing yards and 122 touchdowns with only 18 interceptions.

He is listed as a pro style quarterback, but clearly will need to learn to adapt to Chip Kelly’s motion offense. He has a strong arm in the intermediate passing game, with a quick release.

Griffin joins current freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson who started about half the games this last season at the quarterback position. The Bruins also could be returning Matt Lynch. He would be a redshirt-junior next season but has seen only a handful of snaps in his career, as well as 6-3 Austin Burton, who redshirted his freshman year, 2018. They lose grad transfer Wilton Speight.

Having only one year of space between Thompson-Robinson and Griffin could be a challenge for the UCLA staff when it comes to getting snaps at a position that does not have experienced depth. UCLA had also offered Jayden Daniels from San Bernardino, but he committed to Arizona State last week.
