Kentucky Wildcats 2019 Recruiting Profile JJ Weaver

Kentucky Wildcats 2019 Recruiting Profile JJ Weaver

For the first time in recent memory the Kentucky Wildcats had no in-state players in their 2018 recruiting class. As a result Mark Stoops and the coaching staff worked hard to change that. Of the 21 players in the 2019 class five are from Kentucky. There are none bigger on the list than defensive end JJ Weaver.

The Louisville Moore product rates as the eighth best player in the state and 28th ranked defensive end in the country. He chose the Cats over Louisville, Miami (Florida) and Purdue. During his senior season he led the Mustangs to the Kentucky Class 6A finals. He committed to the Cats on November 30th.

Even though he is listed as a defensive end Weaver did it all during his senior year. In addition to his normal position he also played linebacker, tight end and at one point wide receiver.

A Firm Commitment

Even though Weaver pledged to Kentucky he visited hometown Louisville on December 11th. This of course led to all kinds of questioning on whether he would flip to the Cards and new coach Scott Satterfield. Weaver said he was visiting Louisville because he made a promise to athletic director Vince Tyra. This finally led his mother going on Twitter to clear things up.

Weaver was going to wait until February to sign but ultimately decided to sign on Wednesday. Two other interesting facts on Weaver, he has six fingers on his right hand and his cousin Jordan Wright already plays for the Cats. The two have always talked about playing together and now they get that opportunity.

Kentucky has a number of returning players at the defensive end position in 2019. However it’s going to be difficult to keep someone as talented as Weaver off the field. Especially with the new NCAA rule where you can play up to four games and still be able to red shirt.
