32 Years Ago Today, USA Men’s Basketball Dream Team Won Gold

It was 32 years ago today on August 8, 1992, that Team USA won the gold medal in men’s basketball. Still known as the Dream Team, even by basketball fans who weren’t old enough to see them, they had arguably the greatest collection of basketball talent ever assembled.

It was a cakewalk for the Dream Team to win gold as they manhandled each opponent they faced. Their 12-man roster consisted of 11 players now in the Basketball Hall of Fame. They chose one college player for the team, Christian Laettner, who is the only one not enshrined (imagine if they chose Shaquille O’Neal?).

Blowout After Blowout From The Dream Team

The 1992 USA Dream Team played in eight games during the Barcelona Olympics. The closest of those eight outings was a 32-point win. That was in the gold medal game where they defeated Croatia by the score of 117-85. Their other seven games saw winning margins of 68, 33, 43, 44, 41, 38, and 51 points.

Their roster consisted of many of the best players in that era. Other than Laettner, the Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, David Robinson, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, and Scottie Pippen. The absurd amount of talent and constant blowout victories led to very balanced scoring. During the Olympics, Barkley led the team averaging 18 points per contest. Ten of the 12 players scored at least eight points per game.

Comparisons To 2024 Team

In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA is currently in the semifinals. They are taking on Serbia today, with the winner reaching the gold medal game. Either country will play the winner of the other semifinals game, France vs. Germany.

Since the 2024 Team USA roster was announced, comparisons were being made to the 1992 Dream Team. The team did undergo one change as Kawhi Leonard exited with injury and was replaced by Derrick White. The rest of the roster features LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Stephen Curry, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Jrue Holiday, and Devin Booker.

While Team USA experienced some close wins during exhibition games, they haven’t had to sweat in any of their outings during the Olympics. In the group phase, they defeated Serbia by 26, South Sudan by 17, and Puerto Rico by 21. In the quarterfinals, they won by 35 over Brazil.

The 1992 Summer Olympics had far less NBA players than the current Team USA had to play against. This year, numerous star players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played in Paris for countries other than USA.

In the social media age, people love comparing teams, or individual players, from different eras and pitting them in hypothetical matchups. That has again been the case with the 1992 Dream Team and the current Team USA. Draymond Green recently stated on his podcast that he believes the Dream Team wouldn’t be able to beat the current Olympics team in a series.

“This 2024 team are definitely drawing those comparisons to the Dream Team, and quite frankly, I’m taking the 2024 team seven days a week,” Green said. “I think the 2024 team beats the Dream Team five out of seven games. Got to give the Dream Team some respect, they got GOATs, we get it. They got Hall of Famers, we get it. I just think the versatility on that team, the star power, the scoring, I don’t think the Dream Team can do anything with that.”

While nobody will ever know who would win that matchup, the 1992 Dream Team will likely be remembered for generations. 1992 was the first year NBA players could participate in the Olympics, and the Dream Team featured legends still talked about today.
