It’s no surprise to see such a low projected total at 135.5 points. Saint Mary’s allowed the second-fewest points per game in the country (58.5) during the regular season, and it ranked fourth out of 362 programs in defensive rating.

This Saint Mary’s defense is hard to break. Santa Clara scored 77 on it once — the third-most points the Gaels had given up in a game all year — but it also mustered just 49 in their first meeting, which was the Broncos’ lowest-scoring performance of the season.
Saint Mary’s provides a challenge on all fronts, too. The team ranks first in the nation in two-point percentage allowed (42.4%), and it also held opponents to just 4.9 three-point makes per game, good for No. 2 overall. There is no obvious weakness, which makes generating free-throw attempts essential.
Santa Clara is coming off arguably its best offensive performance of the year on Saturday, a 104-79 victory over San Diego in its WCC Tournament opener. Saint Mary’s, on the other hand, hasn’t played since its 70-57 loss to Gonzaga on March 2.
All things considered, this looks like a great spot for the Gaels. Expect a low-scoring game and for Saint Mary’s to advance to the conference championship game against either Gonzaga or San Francisco.
