Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard Takes The Stand During Clippers Media Day

The talk of the town in the City of Angels might not be the Los Angeles Lakers for once. Even with the Lakers having the larger-than-life superstar duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic, the news surrounding the Los Angeles Clippers has overshadowed what’s actually a critical season in both of their franchise histories.

Kawhi Leonard Takes The Stand During Clippers Media Day

On the surface, the Clippers being investigated for salary cap circumvention may not be all that riveting.

Yet, the scandalous investigation into the Clippers’ obscure sponsorship deal with a now bankrupt company called Aspiration has already swept up majority owner Steve Ballmer, minority owner Dennis Wong and franchise star Kawhi Leonard. The constant back-and-forth between whistleblower Pablo Torre and former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban has only added to the media sensationalism. On top of that, there are certain NBA executives that genuinely would take exception to a glorified backroom deal that helped L.A. sign Leonard.

Not only is this no laughing matter, it’s one that could have serious ramifications. Honestly, when Leonard went to the podium at the Clippers Media Day, he might as well have been taking the stand. With that being said, once the topic was broached, Leonard said exactly what was expected:

“To me, it’s easy (not to get distracted by the investigation,” he tells reporters (h/t The Athletic’s Law Murray).”

“I don’t do conspiracy theories or anything like that. So, it’s about the season and what we’ve got ahead of us right now.”

“This is old… we already knew this was going to happen,” he adds.

When the topic came up again, Leonard explicitly said: “There’s nothing to hide. There’s no wrongdoing here.”

“I’ve been through times like this before, just going through the year last year… You know, soon as I came back, that first game my house and my community caught on fire. So, I don’t think it’s going to be harder than that.

The Last Word On Kawhi Leonard’s Media Day Comments

Leonard referencing the Los Angeles wildfires could be taken in many ways. For example, he could be saying that the heat is on him now, but it’s not as bad as the chaos that was unfolding then. However, no matter how that line is viewed, he’s clearly entered a ‘not guilty’ plea for himself and the organization.

Will the NBA –who will be judge, jury and executioner –agree?
