Real Hope in Orlando

The Magic won 47 games last season, blowing their projected win total of 37.5 out of the water. Furthermore, they had the franchise’s highest win total since the 2010-2011 season. The Magic’s success last season was founded on defense, they were the third-ranked defense in the NBA, and it got them to a Game 7 in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Their lack of experience showed as they blew an 18-point lead in that game.

On the offensive end, the Magic are led by the rising star of Paolo Banchero. In his sophomore season, Banchero averaged 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists last season. Even at 21 years old, he was able to be the focal point of the Magic’s solid NBA offense. Franz Wagner had a solid third season in the league as well, he has improved his scoring total every year and is now averaging 19.7 points.

Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony showed both improvement and potential, while Wendell Carter Jr. and Jonathan Isaac continue to possess tantalizing upside. Banchero and Wagner will continue to be the key pieces for the Magic moving forward, but the rest of the squad is also improving and ready to win.

Offseason Moves

The Magic’s main offseason move was signing veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a three-year, $66-million contract. KCP was an essential piece with the Denver Nuggets in their 2022-23 NBA championship run. He will bring a veteran presence to the Magic’s young locker room, as well as excellent shooting and defense.

The biggest improvement the Magic can hope for by limiting their offseason changes is the development of their young core. Banchero seems to be on the rise to superstardom and could contend to be a top-15 player next season. Wagner has shown flashes but still needs to put all of his skills together consistently to reach his full potential.

Orlando Magic Win Total Odds

The Magic win total is projected at 47.5, with the over set at -112 and the under at -108. They’ve surpassed their win total for two straight seasons and have done it in less than 67 games in both of those seasons. If they go over this year, it will be a lot closer to the line. Now, the Magic are unlikely to catch many by surprise. To expect them to improve on their win total for the third straight year could be optimistic. They certainly could win more games simply behind the fact that their core is young and has yet to hit its peak.
