The Portland Trail Blazers have a unique conundrum ahead of the 2026-27 season. They will be playing under new head coach Micah Nori’s system, and they have to deal with the four-point guard problem. The Blazers’ future is still bright, especially if and when they figure out Scoot Henderson’s role.
Micah Nori Dives Into Scoot Henderson’s Role For The Blazers
Henderson is one of the most interesting players on the roster. Before the 2023-24 season, he was hailed as the future of Trail Blazers basketball. Unfortunately, he did not have the best campaign, as he struggled with his efficiency and turnovers. He could not tie down the starting point guard role because then-head coach Chauncey Billups favored Anfernee Simons.
That was a recurring obstacle for Henderson, even when Simons got traded for veteran point guard Jrue Holiday. Adding injuries to that made it worse for Henderson until he found his footing as a hybrid guard during the Blazers’ postseason run in 2026. Now, Henderson is playing for a new head coach who wants to accommodate him and the heavy guard rotation.
Nori’s System Is Ready For Henderson To Play
Nori had an in-depth discussion with Sean Highkin of the Rose City Report recently about how Henderson will play in the 2026-27 season. Everyone knows that getting Damian Lillard back and Ja Morant in a trade muddles Henderson and Holiday’s roles, but it seems they are all bought into Nori’s system.
“We’ve got to make sure we create space for him. The thing he can do is attack the paint and get downhill, and go where he wants to go. What we have to do is have good spacing, make sure the corners are filled, and then we have outlets for him to get to the paint, and if he can’t finish, then the kick-outs are right there for him where he can see,” Nori said to The Rose Garden’s Sean Highkin.
I spent some time with new Blazers head coach Micah Nori at Summer League and talked to him about his plans for Scoot Henderson, how he'll manage rotations and how the Blazers' play style could differ from what he did in Minnesota.

It is an interesting situation to follow because the Blazers definitely have talent. However, they might not have the perimeter shooting required for this play style. Outside of Lillard, Toumani Camara, and Vit Krejci, Henderson might not have an outlet to pass to.
Morant and Henderson will likely play similar roles when they are not on the court together. Since that athletic slasher profile will be prevalent with both guards, it seems Nori is making it a focal point of his system. Nori wants Morant to be a star, and Henderson can fill in when needed.
That is why general manager Joe Cronin has to make some key signings. There is also development that could happen with the current roster, especially with Shaedon Sharpe, one of the highest-ceiling offensive players on the roster.
Henderson’s Role Is There For The Taking
The Blazers want more dynamism in the offense because they got used to isolation basketball from both Deni Avdija and Sharpe in the 2025-26 season. It was a successful system because they made the Playoffs for the first time in five years.

However, that is not sustainable, especially if they want to compete for a title. Nori would love to have everyone in a more structured system, as he wants all four guards to thrive within their roles.
Henderson will play an important X-factor role because he can create for himself and his teammates. At the same time, he has been a positive defender for Portland, which he has improved on because he has been mentored by Holiday. With the two-way ability, the Blazers can be a dangerous team because they will always have an explosive player handling the ball.
The Trail Blazers’ Future Is Still Bright
With Nori at the helm, there is some genuine excitement happening for the Trail Blazers. He is a motivated head coach who has a lot of talented players at his disposal. Nori’s system will be interesting to follow, especially with Henderson’s role off the bench being a promising one.
The Blazers’ future is bright if they can strike the right balance with the current roster. They have all the talent that can compete with the best teams in the Western Conference, but they need to find the best way to play.
This offseason will be long, but the players and the coaching staff seem ready to work together. Lillard and Holiday are ready to be leaders, while younger players like Henderson, Morant, and Donovan Clingan have all communicated to Nori that they are ready to show out.
