After the spectacular Giannis Antetokounmpo acquisition, the Heat will need to take swift action to book some expert veterans for team building around the superstar.

Miami Heat Needs To Target These Players ASAP After Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Miami Heat has finally achieved success in their relentless chase of the biggest superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The news broken by ESPN’s Shams Charania has spread like wildfire all around, leaving everyone to contemplate the Miami Heat’s immediate future. This acquisition has left a big hole in their roster with four players traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, making space for further external additions.

Now the paramount question is: how will the Heat build a winning team around their new superstar and captain, Bam Adebayo? Before they finalize the Bucks deal on July 6, the Heat need to add some key players.

Miami Heat Needs To Target These Players ASAP After Giannis Antetokounmpo

Along with some fabulous future first-round picks, Miami gave away  Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis, all players under 30. At the moment, Heat still has Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins, and Davion Mitchell in the projected starting lineup. But with the four pros gone, Pat Riley needs to build the roster with shooters and playmakers.

A supporting cast of accomplished veterans

Khris Middleton

The former companion of Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, would make a wonderful addition to the Heat. During his 12 years in Milwaukee, he served as their best clutch perimeter shooter and was instrumental in winning their 2021 championship. Middleton is a 2-Time All-Star and excels at elite mid-range shooting and gaining control in the third quarter.

The forward spent last season on two teams, starting with the Washington Wizards before being moved to the Dallas Mavericks at the February trade deadline. In the 63 games, Middleton averaged 22.8 minutes, 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting 42.0% from the field. His 6-foot-7 frame and 6-10.75 inches wingspan give him an easy edge over small players.

The 33-year-old is an unrestricted free agent and could be easily acquired. Together with Antetokounmpo, they could bring the flavor of a championship, something Miami hasn’t tasted in a while. After the acquisition news, Middleton has suddenly become a hot commodity to join his former Bucks ally.

 Tim Hardaway Jr

This Denver Nuggets shooting guard, who is skilled at deep shooting and has explosive catch-and-shoot ability, is another option for Miami. Tim Hardaway Jr has been in the league for 13 years, earning expertise across multiple teams. He is coming off a fabulous season, finishing in the top three on the Sixth Man of the Year list.

This season, Hardaway averaged 26.6 minutes, 13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 44.7% from the field. His shooting ability makes him attractive, as he shot 40.7% from three-point range. Last year, he signed a one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Nuggets, and now he is an unrestricted free agent.

Gabe Vincent

The former Miami Heat veteran, Gabe Vincent, played for them from 2020 to 23. With the Heat, he hit benchmarks of winning the Most Improved Player award in 2020 and a playoff career high of 29 points against the Boston Celtics in 2021. In a 2023 game against the Denver Nuggets, he scored a team-high 23 points in a 111–108 win.

Vincent last played for the Atlanta Hawks after being traded from the LA Lakers. His three-year, $33 million contract is over, and he, too, is stepping into free agency and is on Miami’s minimum-salary list. He knows the “Heat Culture” inside out and could benefit them with his point-of-attack defense and composed floor leadership.

This is a make-or-break time for the franchise, which needs to stand on the shoulders of dependable players to reach contention. Despite their cap limitations, Miami could make sensible choices with these veterans through minimum contracts and cap exceptions.

What’s past the Heat-Antetokounmpo quick fix?

For Miami, landing a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber immediately elevates them into the championship conversation and perhaps a few notches up in the Eastern Conference. Bringing over Antetokounmpo is set to strengthen Miami’s offense and defense, and so many other loose ends. The superstar’s pairing with Adebayo will make an iron-clad defense in the NBA.

At the moment, Riley and Eric Spoelstra can finally breathe in relief for a few moments. Then they have to jump all in to build and shape the roster with unbreakable components and no leaks. Acquiring Antetokounmpo was indeed a tough nut to crack, but it was only the first domino. Handpicking suitable players around him is another crucial step that the front office cannot afford to get wrong.
