It is no secret that in their aggressive trade strategy, Giannis Antetokounmpo is the first target of the Miami Heat. However, acquiring a player of his caliber won’t be as easy as it seems. With the player himself harboring an interest in their competitor, the Boston Celtics, the competition is cutthroat. If Miami fails to acquire the Greek Freak, what are the Heat’s best options?
Sitting outside the playoffs has provided the Heat’s back office ample time to prepare strategies and promptly act on them once the offseason begins. Half a decade since their best games, right now, Miami is weak after shaky seasons, but sitting with a vantage point of addressing their issues and the opportunity of revival with or without other superstar players.
What’s The Miami Heat Backup Plan If Giannis Antetokounmpo Is Lost To Boston Celtics?
Antetokounmpo is the biggest draft catch of this season, and the Heat are willing to make major sacrifices for him. From Jaime Jaquez Jr. to Kel’el Ware, all the small links in the roster are under speculation and fear of getting exchanged in the draft combination. Even long-term players like Tyler Herro are under the radar of exchange. However, what’s next for them if this biggest bet of the Heat failed?
Alternative players
Besides Antetokounmpo, the Heat does have a good couple of superstar options in the form of Ja Morant or Donovan Mitchell. Morant is among the names that have been linked with the Heat this season. The point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies is himself interested in playing for them and could fill their need for backcourt players. He is also a preferred option of the fans who think his skills will match their requirements perfectly.
Mitchell is another rewarding option for the Heat, who are also rumored to be pursued by them. Miami has been expected as the safe option for the Cleveland Cavaliers player if all goes well. He could be a great on-court aid to their captain, Bam Adebayo, who these days is earning accolades around the NBA in his own right. The two also share a good off-court friendship.
There is also the path of using the Mid-Level Exception (MLE) in free agency to retain and develop their young roster and strengthen from within.
Dire Need Of A Superstar Player
The Heat are wisely ready with some quality options for this offseason, should they choose to walk the line. Antetokounmpo is on one of the most expensive contracts in terms of average annual value, and he will be in negotiations for his four-year, $275 million extension. It will be difficult to accommodate Antetokounmpo’s $58 million annual contract in a trade, and the Heat will have to deal with extension negotiations till October. Whereas Morant is set for $42 million and Mitchell for $50 million for the 2026-27 season, making them both easier to trade for. In return, both these names have the capability to become the Heat’s superstar player.
The lack of star power has severely slowed, if not halted, the Heat in its tracks. Last year, the trade of Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors left a profound effect, the repercussions of which were felt throughout the season.
As the sole heavy lifter in the current roster, Adebayo can only do so much in a game that requires another well-seasoned player to share his load. To make up for the lost glory, they are again hunting a giant whale that’s not easy to hook, especially when the competition is this tight.
The NBA-Wide Trade Hunt For Giannis Antetokounmpo
With his supremely adaptable physical capabilities and offensive and defensive skills, Antetokounmpo undoubtedly is the biggest catch in the NBA at the moment. This season, he has averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, proving himself a very valuable asset for the Milwaukee Bucks and putting him on the radar of other teams looking to upgrade. And reportedly emerging as a contender in this competition is the Celtics. A lot depends on Antetokounmpo’s choice, and currently, he is also interested in them, alongside the Heat, making the situation spicier.
As per reporting from Marc Stein, the Celtics, not surprisingly, are another preferred destination; a team that also reached out to the Bucks for him earlier but didn’t reap any results. But that is not all. The Greek Freak has also got the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and the New York Knicks trailing him. The market is wide open for the superstar player, but the Heat needs him the most.
In their current state, the nine-time All-NBA forward definitely is the answer to all of Miami’s prayers. However, they should also be ready with backup plans if the first fails to materialize.
