Brandon Clarke’s Legacy Will Forever Be Celebrated In Memphis

Brandon Clarke‘s legacy will forever be ingrained in the identity of the Memphis Grizzlies after years of meaningful impact on the Memphis community, both on and off the court. The unexpected news of his passing left a city and fanbase that had celebrated him for the past eight years grieving on Tuesday afternoon.

For many Grizzlies fans, Clarke represented the heart of the franchise’s rise during their Next Gen era. Whether it was his hustle plays or ability to shift momentum in crucial moments, he consistently embodied the energy that Grizzlies basketball became known for.

Unfortunately, injuries derailed his last four seasons with the team, but his effort could never be questioned when he was healthy enough to play. While the cause of his death is being investigated, it is only right that Clarke’s legacy is celebrated for the time he spent with the organization.

Brandon Clarke’s Summer League Breakout

After a successful collegiate tenure that saw Clarke win various accolades during his junior season at Gonzaga, he was drafted with the 21st overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, the Grizzlies made a draft night trade for his rights before it became official a couple of weeks later.

What followed was a dominant NBA Summer League performance that saw Clarke average nearly a double-double in six games. He won MVP en route to leading the Grizzlies to the 2019 Summer League Championship. That represented the beginning of Clarke’s legacy to the Memphis fanbase.

An All-Rookie Selection Confirmed His Potential

Clarke followed up his Summer League breakout with an outstanding rookie campaign that earned him NBA All-Rookie first team honors in 2020. He also finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting, which was won by his teammate Ja Morant. Most impressive was his receiving that recognition as a bench contributor who only started four games that season.

The highlight of his rookie season was his 20-point performance off of 4-5 shooting from three in the Grizzlies’ play-in loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Clarke was never known as a three-point shooter, but displayed that ability during the team’s most important game of his rookie season.

His Minnesota Playoff Series Became A Memphis Classic

Among the most unforgettable moments in Clarke’s legacy was his performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2022 NBA Playoffs. He was arguably the most important player for the Grizzlies in their only playoff series win during the Next Gen era.

With starters Steven Adams (mismatch) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (foul trouble) struggling for different reasons, Clarke dominated the boards and was a menace defensively. He averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks in their six-game series win over the Timberwolves.

Timberwolves fans still talk about how dominant he was just as much as Grizzlies fans during that series. Even going as far as to say that Minnesota traded for Rudy Gobert the following offseason because of Clarke’s presence. Even years later, many Grizzlies fans still point to that series as one of the clearest examples of Clarke’s legacy as a Grizzly.

His Impact Extended Far Beyond Basketball

While his on-court contributions mattered deeply, Clarke’s legacy also lives through the work he did in the Memphis community. He was consistently described as kind, approachable, and generous by those who conversed with him. Reports following his passing highlighted his compassion and the positive influence he had on those around him.

Just last year, he launched the Brandon Clarke Foundation, which was created to aid families struck by tragedies. Furthermore, his foundation donated to the non-profit organization, ARISE2Read, which raises awareness of literacy skills in the youth. He presented a $1,500 check to a local school the day before his last birthday, which was followed by the kids singing him the happy birthday song.

Clarke’s ending was met with some recent controversy, but his impact on the Memphis Grizzlies and the community was felt throughout his time with the organization. For Memphis fans, Clarke will always represent one of the most beloved figures of an unforgettable era. That is why Clarke’s legacy will forever live in Memphis.
