One of the many NBA Draft prospects that could have been a high pick in prior years, Bruce Thornton spent four years at Ohio State and showed why he’s the best Buckeye scorer of all-time. But sticking around doesn’t always help your stock, and that might be the case for Thornton.
Let’s take a look at his 2026 Draft profile.
Bruce Thornton 2026 NBA Draft Profile
College Career
Thornton was a highly sought-after player coming out of Milton, Georgia. He chose Ohio State as a member of the 2022 recruiting class. He was an automatic starter the minute he arrived in Columbus. Not to mention, he was an automatic scorer.
He averaged 10.6 points and 2.6 assists as a freshman, starting all 35 games he played in. He kept that role the following season and put up 15.7 points and 4.8 assists per game.
Thornton took another leap as a junior and began to show why he was an impact scorer. He averaged 17.7 points and 4.6 assists per game, earning second team All-Big Ten honors and hearing some real NBA Draft Buzz.
Thornton had other ideas, though, returning for his senior season in 2025-26. It was well worth it as he scored 19.9 points per game and claimed All-Big Ten honors for the third-time. He also led Ohio State to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022.
The senior finished his career with 2,164 points, 541 assists, and 507 rebounds. He broke the Ohio State scoring record previously held by Dennis Hopson.
Strengths
Offense
Thornton is a clear self-creator and can run the pick and roll. He has the ability to score at all three levels, with his strength making up for his 6-foot-2 frame. A career 38 percent three-point shooter, Thornton has been known to knock down some clutch shots.
He’s not only a scorer, but he can also set up his teammates, with enough vision to drop five assists per game. He’s never rushed and always makes the right move. Thornton is an efficient shooter, despite a lighter volume of shots — he never averaged more than 13 attempts per game.
Thornton is able to make highly contested shots, which not many can do. Without a doubt, he’s among the best scoring guards the Big Ten has seen in recent memory.
Defense
Thornton isn’t going to be the primary defender, but he certainly has the skill and strength to make things difficult. He never gives up on plays. He’s at his best as a pesky on-ball defender who can play low while also getting under the ball handler.
Sneaky good as a rebounding guard, Thornton averaged 3.7 boards for his career. He also had 29 or more steals in each of his four seasons. Thornton never gets in foul trouble, despite his tendency to go swiping. His footwork is really good, which is part of the reason why he’s able to fight his way around screens. His strong upper-body allows him to stay in the play when he collides with a screener.

Weaknesses
Offense
If he’s going to translate his scoring and clutch shooting to the NBA, Thornton must increase his volume. That is the number one concern for him. He’s proven he can make shots at all three levels, but can he completely take over a game?
Thornton also lacks the athleticism that most elite NBA point guards have. He doesn’t have the vertical leap or quickness to finish over defenders consistently. That will make him vulnerable when contested near the basket, with his height obviously playing a major role.
Defense
Thornton’s frame is also going to limit him against much taller guards. He’s undersized for the point guard spot, with the average height of NBA guards being between 6’4″ and 6’6″. Thornton can make up for it with his strength, but it’s still going to be a concern if he gets a real look.
His height will also be an issue trying to guard the paint, since he’s certainly not a blocking threat. Thornton will be in for a long night when forced into a mismatch, especially with the sizes of NBA bigs.
NBA Comparison
Sure, he was the go-to point guard at Ohio State, but Thornton will be more of a quality backup as a pro. His size limits him, but he certainly compares nicely to the Denver Nuggets’ Tyus Jones. Thornton’s size and strength, along with his scoring ability, would be a bit of an improvement compared to Jones.
He has the ceiling to reach the level Jalen Brunson has reached for the New York Knicks. Brunson was a second-round pick and had to prove his way initially despite a highly successful collegiate career. Thornton could honestly be a steal in this draft if he’s selected and lands in the right place.
