College Career
Boozer and his twin brother, Cayden Boozer, played for Christopher Columbus High School in their senior year before committing to Duke. The son of former NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer now plays under head coach Jon Scheyer, serving as Duke’s main focal point on the offensive end. In that role, Boozer has demonstrated himself to be a highly efficient scorer who can be relied upon to create his own shot, play-make for others, and knock down shots from beyond the arc. Furthermore, the six-foot-nine forward is an impactful defender and rebounder who has assisted in helping the Blue Devils be an elite defense.
As of March 2, Boozer has led the Blue Devils to a 28-2 record and gone 16-1 in conference play. He is currently averaging 22.5 points, 10 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.7 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. Furthermore, he is shooting 57.7% from the field, 40.2% from three, and 78.2% from the free-throw line.
Strengths
Offense
Unquestionably, Boozer possesses an effective and versatile offensive skill set that allows him to occupy various offensive roles. He is certainly an efficient scorer around the rim, shooting 68.4% at the rim. While Boozer can operate well as a roller in the pick-and-roll, he can create shots at the rim for himself. Specifically, Boozer has the ball-handling ability to take opposing players off the dribble, and he can operate in the post as well. Boozer can even lead the fast-break and score in transition. He has a great touch around the rim, and Boozer utilizes deft footwork and physicality to break down opposing defenders.
In terms of his shooting, Boozer is someone that teams must account for beyond the arc. He is a knock-down three-point shooter who can space the floor in a spot-up role. Furthermore, Boozer has the shooting ability to be utilized as a pick-and-pop target. He is effective at moving off the ball to get open for threes, and he has shown increasing confidence as a pull-up shooter as well.
To round out his offensive game, Boozer has shown excellence as a playmaker for his team. Boozer possesses great court vision and passing ability. Weaknesses
Offense
For someone like Boozer, it’s extremely hard to poke holes in such a well-rounded player. He is extremely consistent on either end of the floor, with the production to back it up. If there is anything to note in terms of offensive deficiencies, it is Boozer’s handle. He is certainly not a bad ball-handler by any means, especially for his position. Nevertheless, he can stand to tighten up his handle as it can become loose. His lackluster athleticism can also be a small weakness as he isn’t the type to finish over opponents and relies on his strength, touch, and footwork to break down opposing defenders. Regardless, though, these weaknesses are not any major indictment of him. His overall offensive package is still extremely effective and translatable.
Defense
As stated before, it is certainly difficult to find any weaknesses in his game. However, certain concerns with Boozer on the defensive end are where most of his criticism lies. Specifically, the two things that have been nitpicked with Boozer on defense are his notable lack of lateral quickness and underwhelming vertical athleticism. To be fair, Boozer can occasionally have some difficulty when defending in isolation against quicker guards due to his lack of lateral quickness. Additionally, Boozer doesn’t have the explosiveness or height to be a true rim protector. Both aspects do put certain limits on him. Nevertheless, Boozer compensates for his weaknesses using his high IQ, relentless motor, and other physical tools to be impactful. Even with those weaknesses, neither will prevent Boozer from being a good defender at the next level.
NBA Comparison
The two names that come to mind in regard to a comparison for Boozer are Kevin Love and Al Horford. All three players are certainly high-IQ basketball players who possess highly versatile skill sets. In particular, they each have shown the ability to dribble, pass, and shoot at a high level. Not only that, but they are also strong rebounders and impactful defenders as well. While none of them are overly athletic, they use their immense feel, physicality, and size to make their mark on either end of the floor.
