Nets Leading Scorer Goes Off On Zach Lowe On X

Restricted free agents, at least the notable ones, have been just sitting out there on the market this offseason. While almost all of them (except perhaps Jonathan Kuminga) aren’t expected to switch teams, they still remain unsigned. One of those restricted free agents that remains unsigned is the Brooklyn Nets leading scorer the last two seasons, Cam Thomas. On Friday, Thomas went on X to show his displeasure on comments that were recently made about him.

Cam Thomas Not Pleased With Zach Lowe’s Comments

If you weren’t expecting Cam Thomas to go on X to use expletives on The Ringer’s Zach Lowe, you’re not alone. That is exactly what happened on Friday though. On Lowe’s podcast, he spoke of how Thomas is seen as an “empty calories ball hog” amongst other comments he made on Thomas.

Rather than sit back after seeing his name disparaged by a notable figure, the 23-year-old shooting guard went on X and let his thoughts flow out. A couple expletives were thrown Lowe’s (and the consensus’) way as Thomas looked to defend himself.

Now to be fair, Lowe didn’t say that was what he thought of Thomas as a player. He has been in the NBA business for quite some time, and likely has a lot of people that work in the league that he talks to. He is just reporting on what he heard from those that he spoke with. Since those people don’t have names attached to them though and remain anonymous, Thomas took out his frustrations on Lowe.

Career-Best Numbers Last Season

Last season, his fourth in the league, Thomas was putting up some career-best numbers. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-4 guard appeared in just 25 games. A strained hamstring ended his year prematurely and also kept him out for a long stint towards the middle of the season.

Playing 31.2 minutes per contest, Thomas posted averages in 2024-25 of 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. Those are career-highs across the board. The 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft shot 43.8% from the field, 34.9% from beyond the arc, and 88.1% from the free-throw line. Those shooting numbers are pretty much in line with what he has done in his career, although his free-throw percentage was a career-high.

As mentioned by Thomas, the Nets started the season in the playoff picture. This was after having the lowest O/U win total in the preseason. They were certainly exceeding expectations with their new head coach, Jordi Fernandez. Brooklyn went 9-10 in their first 19 contests. They later began trading off pieces though such as Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Schroder. Along with injuries including those that happened to Thomas, they went just 17-46 in their final 63 games.

The Nets extended a $5.99 million qualifying offer to Thomas, allowing him to become a restricted free agent. If Thomas can’t find an agreement to his liking, he can accept the qualifying offer, and enter unrestricted free agency in the 2026 offseason.
