Another day, another update on Jimmy Butler. During his time away from the court due to suspension, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Butler met with Heat owner Pat Riley to “reiterate” his trade request.

Butler “Not Signing” a New Deal
In revealing the meeting between Butler and Riley, Charania wrote:
“Butler told Riley that he will not sign a new deal in Miami and intends to only use his $52 million player option in the offseason for 2025-26 as a trade maneuver, sources said. Butler’s seven-game, team-issued suspension from the Heat — for what was termed ‘detrimental conduct’ — ends Thursday, at which point the Heat will be faced with finding a path forward for Butler, with options including a return to the roster or a trade. Heat officials will meet later this week to discuss the best route with Butler, who requested a trade earlier this month, league sources said.
“Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and players such as Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have spoken in the last week about finding clarity and eliminating the distraction of Butler’s circumstances during his absence. … The Heat have engaged with multiple teams on Butler trade scenarios and have received offers but have been hesitant to negotiate further, sources said. Riley has not shown an urgency in these talks, as the trade deadline looms on Feb. 6, sources added.”

The Market Value
Other than Jimmy Butler using his $52.1 million player option to perhaps regain leverage, chances are his trade request is fulfilled before the February 6th deadline. As for his trade situation, there isn’t any new information. The Heat are probably aware that no one can perform the same routine next year.
In this two-apron arrangement, multi-team deals are more common and easier to execute during the offseason, particularly when the greatest number is an eight-figure salary north of $5 million.
To try to recover value next season and sign a short-term max deal, Butler’s market is shrinking by the second. The Brooklyn Nets do have the greatest cap space available entering 2025–2026, but they don’t plan on chasing him.
Butler’s “Potential” arrival to Phoenix?
The deadline is still 23 days away. However, who’s counting?
The largest barrier to Butler’s arrival in Phoenix—the only team that has reportedly expressed any interest in paying him (reviving his joy!)—is there right now. The Suns would have to locate a willing third team for whom Bradley Beal would be ready to waive his no-trade clause. Beal is in charge of his fate, as he said, “I hold the cards.”
The Last Word on Jimmy Butler’s Trade Request
There is a high chance that Butler will play for another team past the deadline. Keeping Butler around would continue to create an uncomfortable locker room dynamic for the Heat.
However, that doesn’t have to extend longer than three weeks out. As it currently stands, the Heat are now 3-3 following Butler’s suspension. They will play the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday to wrap up their six-game road trip.
