NBA Rumors: Nets, Warriors Deep In Trade Discussions

With trade talks heating up across the league, the Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets are discussing a deal that would bring veteran point guard Dennis Schroder to the Bay Area, according to ESPN senior insider Shams Charania.

Nets, Warriors Deep In Dennis Schroder Trade Discussions

Schroder is in the midst of a career season, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists per game. Even better, he’s been efficient, shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from three. The German floor general has subsequently become a highly valuable asset for Brooklyn, whether they retain him or move him. In fact, Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez has even been vocal about Schroder’s intangibles, as the former first-round pick is undeniably the locker room leader.

However, Schroder was never a clean fit for the Nets due to his age (31). If Brooklyn still employed James Harden, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving, then Schroder would look like a potential fixture. Yet, after trading their All-Star trio, the Nets are in rebuilding mode. Because they’re currently in playoff contention, that may not be completely clear. Nonetheless, Brooklyn playing so well this season wasn’t the plan, it’s just the byproduct of Fernandez overachieving.

In moving Schroder, the Nets would likely want to receive draft compensation.

The Warriors are equipped to send Brooklyn either a first round pick or a pair of seconds. However, Schroder’s expiring $13 million contract must be taken into account. At that number, Golden State’s most likely trade candidates may be De’Anthony Melton ($12.8 million) and Gary Payton II ($9.1 million). With both Melton and Payton on expiring contracts themselves though, the big prize for the Nets would still be the attached draft pick.
