Atlanta Starter Named In Hawks Trade Rumors

The Atlanta Hawks trade rumors are starting up again. The team has been trying to figure out what they are. They have young talent that seems worth developing, but they also have a cast of veteran players who want to contend for playoff positioning. Some of the team’s most intriguing trade possibilities are with their veteran center, Clint Capela. A Capela trade has been consistently spoken about, it seems like every season, but recent reports from NBA insider Marc Stein say that Capela will once again be shopped around this season.

Capela is now in his 11th NBA season and fifth with the Hawks.  He is known for his rim-running ability, as well as his defense and rebounding. Capela is averaging 10.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 58.2% from the field this season. Although his numbers are down from the last couple of seasons, he is still a solid contributor to the Hawks. However, his expiring $22.27 million contract and Atlanta’s current roster construction make him a perfect candidate for an Atlanta Hawks trade.

Marc Stein’s recent report confirmed a potential Capela trade could be on the horizon, saying that the center is very available in trade talks. Capela has reportedly drawn interest this offseason from teams like the New York Knicks, Memphis Grizzlies, and New Orleans Pelicans. In reality, anyone who can take on his cap number and is looking for some size and interior presence should consider him.

A Clint Capela Trade Could Help Contenders

Capela is a reliable rim protector and rebounder with playoff experience. Atlanta, however, may see trading him as an opportunity to hand the keys to Onyeka Okongwu. Okongwu has developed into a player who could anchor their defense, making Capela’s role more expendable. Right now, the centers are splitting time at the center position, but if the Hawks choose to move more toward youth development, Okongwu is the clear choice.

Capela Trade Could Help Hawks Rebuild

The Hawks are doing fine this season. They are 13-12 and sitting in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings. This type of season is a familiar narrative for the franchise. With Trae Young on the roster, they have stayed in the conversation for playoff positioning each year. Earlier this year, they even got lucky and won the draft lottery, landing them Zaccharie Risacher and further muddying their timeline.

The Hawks have other veteran pieces as well. De’Andre Hunter, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Larry Nance Jr. have all been mentioned in trade talks at some point recently. Still, Capela’s expiring contract makes him the most likely to be moved.

For Capela, a trade to a contender could revamp his career and provide an opportunity to compete for a title. For Atlanta, moving him could signal a definitive shift toward a new identity. As the trade deadline approaches, the Hawks must decide whether to stay the course with their current roster or embrace change, with Capela’s future potentially serving as the bellwether for their organizational direction.
