Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs are playing in a high pressure NBA Cup game.

Wemby Playing his Most Important NBA Game to Date

On Tuesday, Victor Wembanyama will finally play in a high-pressure, high-stakes NBA game. No, it will not be a playoff game, but the stakes for Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns are higher than those of a regular-season game. The San Antonio Spurs must win their final NBA Cup game to advance.

For the first time in Wemby’s career, he is in a win-or-go-home NBA game. While he has been in similar games with the French national team and previously when he played in France, this is a different situation.

Wemby Playing his Most Important NBA Game to Date

When the league introduced the NBA Cup a year ago, they probably had this in mind. Make the regular season more interesting and appealing for players and fans. Victor is in his second year and has plenty of chances to make the playoffs. But for young Wemby, this is the most important game of his NBA career so far. Last year, the Spurs were quickly eliminated from the NBA Cup. This year, they are close to advancing.

What Do the Spurs Need to Advance in the NBA Cup?

The San Antonio Spurs are tied for first place in Western Conference Group B, and it all comes down to a single game.

The Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Phoenix Suns are all tied at 2-1, with the Suns having the best point differential at +19, followed by the Thunder with +18; the Spurs have a +14. Like in European leagues, point differential matters in the NBA Cup. If the Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns, they will clinch Group B and advance to the knockout rounds. They will be one of the six group winners moving on.

Even with a loss, they can secure a wild-card spot, but they will depend on other teams to advance. With a loss, the Spurs advance if:

  • The Thunder lose to the Jazz by a margin that damages OKC’s point differential
  • The Mavs, who currently have the best chances for the West’s wild card spot, need to lose their final game
  • The Spurs need to keep their loss to the Suns as close as possible to get a favorable point differential

What Can We Expect From Wemby

As you can see, Victor Wembanyama finds himself in a win-or-go-home likely scenario when the team visits the Suns. At only 20 years of age, Vic will experience a playoff-like atmosphere in a hostile environment. While some fans do not care about the NBA Cup, players and coaches obviously do. Everybody wants to win, and for teams that an NBA title seems far-fetched, the NBA Cup is a great opportunity. Last year, the Indiana Pacers made it to the Finals, beating two of the Eastern Conference favorites, the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.

So far, Wemby hasn’t played in a high-pressure game in the NBA. Yet, he has played in elimination games with the France national basketball team. He helped the team make it to the Paris 2024 gold medal game. Victor was not his best self in the quarter-finals and semi-finals versus Germany and Canada. He scored only seven points versus Canada in the quarter-finals but grabbed 12 rebounds and had three steals and one block. Against Germany in the semi-finals, he had 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Victor had his best game in the gold medal game against the USA national team, scoring 26 points on 11-19 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and a steal.

So far this season, he is averaging 24 points on 48.4% shooting to go along with 10.2 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. He needs to show up against the Suns for the Spurs to advance.
