Stockton Kings center Skal Labissiere contests shot in G League Up Next Game

First Round Pick Using G League To Make NBA Comeback

According to Sean Cunningham of FOX40 News, former first-round pick Skal Labissiere will sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Sacramento Kings.

An Exhibit 10 attachment allows teams to convert a player’s one-year minimum contract into a two-way contract before the start of the season. They allow players to earn a bonus if they’re waived by a team and sign to their G League affiliate, in this case the Stockton Kings, and remain with that team for 60 days.

First Round Pick Skal Labissiere Using G League To Make NBA Comeback

Sacramento only has two players —rookie forward Isaiah Crawford and forward-center Isaac Jones —on two-way contracts. As a result, Labissiere could be in strong consideration for their remaining two-way slot. If not, it appears that he’ll simply be waived before joining Stockton next season.

Last season, Labissiere averaged 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game in the G League. At 6-foot-10, he made his living around the rim as a roller and cleaning up misses. However, he’s also demonstrated solid playmaking and has the ability to score out to 3-point range.

As a reward for his play, he was selected to participate in the G League Up Next Game.

Will He Play For The Sacramento Kings Again?

Notably, Labissiere didn’t receive a call-up from the Kings or any other organization last season. In fact, his last NBA game was in 2019, with the Portland Trail Blazers. That being said, the five-year gap makes it a bit difficult to fathom him making an NBA comeback in 2024-25. Nonetheless, he’s the type of player teams don’t mind keeping at the end of the bench.

Furthermore, the simplicity of his role is the beauty of it. He’s been effective in the pick-and-roll and as a shot-blocker, the bread-and-butter of big men. So, if the Kings —or another squad —wants to sign a traditional big man, he’s not a bad option. Interestingly, several teams who could use such a player, namely Sacramento, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Chicago Bulls.

Skal’s Symbolic Significance

Labissiere, now 28 years old, was selected by the Kings with the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. Born in Port-au-Prince, he’s just one of five Haitian-born players in NBA history. He’s currently the only Haitian native signed to any type of NBA contract.
