Ricky Rubio of the Cleveland Cavaliers reported on this past Saturday that he will be taking a break from participating in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He cites the reason to center on his mental wellbeing. The move that comes as his Spanish national team plans to retain its title at the FIBA World Cup that begins August 25th this year.

Spaniard’s Titan

Rubio was voted the MVP of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.  He was key in driving Spain to clinch the FIBA 2019 Men’s championship and set the 8-0 record in the tournament. However, Spain expected Rubio to be part of their team that looks to defend that crown in the World Cup that starts Aug. 25.  Three countries host the event: Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. “I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health,” said Rubio from a recent statement with the FEB.

Cleveland’s Finest

Not only is he the current FIBA 2019 MVP, but Rubio has much experience. He is the oldest and the most experienced player on Cleveland Cavaliers’ roster.  Rubio played for 12 seasons, so far, appearing with teams such as  Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix and the Cavaliers.

Past Setbacks for Rubio

Over the past recent last two seasons, Rubio had an injury.  Therefore, he had to miss the majority of the season games as he was recovering from a torn left ACL. He primarily played as a reserve for 33 games at the end of the past season.

Best Wishes for Rubio

Additionally, Rubio stated the need for his privacy, as he goes through his mentally trying moments.  He will update and give more information as the days progresses forward. The 32-year-old veteran point guard appeared in the most FIBA games.

Moreover, Rubio ranks as the most experienced player on both the NBA league and FIBA national level.  The FEB said that it will grant Ricky Rubio’s wishes and also expressed their respect and affection for the Spaniard.
