David Roddy 2022 NBA Draft Profile

College Career

Roddy dominated Minnesota high school basketball, averaging about 30 points and 17 rebounds a game as a senior. He then committed to Colorado State over other programs such as Minnesota and Northwestern.

Production came quick as a freshman. In his first year, Roddy averaged about 11 points and six rebounds per game as a Ram. Things got even better his sophomore year as he averaged about 16 points, nine rebounds, and three assists per game. Roddy was voted onto the All-Mountain West first team.

Roddy’s best season came this past year as a junior. He averaged about 19 points, seven boards, and three assists per game. He also racked up a block and steal per game. In addition, Roddy shot a very impressive 44 percent from three. He was named onto the All-Mountain West first team once again, but also won the Mountain West Player of the Year award. He didn’t quite make it as an All-American, but he was an honorable mention.

Strengths

Roddy’s shooting from deep really impressed scouts this season. He shot 20 percent from deep his freshman season and 28 percent his sophomore season, so it’s clear he put a ton of work into it. NBA teams love their shooting, so Roddy instantly became a better prospect with this.

Outside of pure shooting, Roddy can score in a variety of ways. He thrives in the post, finishes strongly around the rim, and has a very nice fadeaway shot. In short, Roddy is very skilled offensively and as efficient as they come.

He has two-way prowess as well. Roddy can defend plenty of players in his forward position. His rebounding has always been a strong suit as well. Last season he showed he can block shots with ease but also create turnovers with steals. As a former high school football player, Roddy also plays with plenty of grit and determination.

Weaknesses

Roddy is undersized for the forward position in the NBA. This wasn’t a major concern in college, but he stands at 6’6″. This may create difficulties defensively. Other players in the past have had this disadvantage, but overcame it with their style of play and toughness. The good news for Roddy is that he still holds the traits to be one of these undersized “enforcers.”

He can also improve as a ball-handler overall, although he isn’t expected to carry a lot of these duties. Finally, Roddy will likely be drafted with his shooting in mind. His shooting drastically improved this past season, but there’s a chance that it was an outlier season.

NBA Player Comparison for David Roddy

Roddy can fit a similar mold to Kenrich Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both players can hit open shots, play tough defense, play with plenty of hustle, and rebound well.

NBA Draft Projection

Roddy is a second-round talent, but is likely to be drafted at the earlier stages of the second round.
