After all of the trouble surrounding the Caterham team this weekend, it has been announced that their current driver Marcus Ericsson will be moving to the Sauber team for the 2015 season. The Swedish driver made his debut this season and has impressed on a number of occasions, and has taken Caterham’s strongest result of the season – 11th place at the Monaco Grand Prix. He has had the upper hand of his team make Kamui Kobayashi in recent races on top of that.
Sauber have been reported to be struggling significantly this season with a tricky car and a rather uninspiring line-up of Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez. They are yet to score any points this season but Sutil qualified in tenth place for the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
Ericsson was just one driver linked with the team. With his significant budget which is rumoured to be about 20 million Euros, it put him ahead of drivers like Giedo van der Garde, Sauber’s test driver, who has a significantly smaller budget. Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin is also linked with the team for 2015, but his poor form in this year’s Formula Renault 3.5 season has seen his chances reduced for landing a seat next year.
Ericsson’s team mate is yet to be announced. He joins the likes of Daniil Kvyat and Sebastian Vettel as drivers who will move teams next season.
