It was six years ago. The NASCAR Nationwide Series featured two rookie drivers who now run full time in the Sprint Cup Series.
Those two drivers are we’re Landon Cassill and Joey Logano, but you’ll never guess which one of those drivers won the 2008 NNS Rookie of the Year Award. Cassill took the 2008 ROTY Award in a JR Motorsports car in the teams first year.
Unfortunately, Cassill, Earnhardt, and Rick Hendrick went their separate ways and left Cassill looking for a ride.
This season, Landon Cassill signed a contract with Mike Hillman Racing in the Sprint Cup Series; an underfunded team in it’s first year of competition in the series.
Despite this, Cassill is dominating the lower tier of NASCAR drivers racking up an 11th place finish this weekend in the Cup Series at Talladega. Two lanes had gone down the straight away, and as he moved to the high line Kyle Busch followed.
He was getting a strong push toward the end of the race when NASCAR flew the caution flag, and could have given Denny Hamlin a run for his money.
Landon Cassill appeared on Monday’s edition of NASCAR Race Hub wearing a Carsforsale.com polo and announced that he would run the sponsor for this weekend’s night race at Kansas Speedway.
Even with an underfunded team, Cassill got an 18-race sponsorship from Fuhu Industries and Nabi Tablets. That deal still has 16 races left, and Carsforsale.com took a few other races after his result at Talladega.
However, Cassill’s success hasn’t stopped in the Cup Series; he is making lots of noise in the Nationwide Series this year.
Signing with JD Motorsports for the second season in a row (this ride is a full-time ride) the #01 car has been given a good amount of air time this year, especially in the last four weeks. Landon Cassill grabbed a top 20 qualifying spot in each of those races including trips to the last round of qualifying at Talladega and Richmond.
Not to mention, the JD Motorsports car has three straight top 15’s and a great run at Talladega to finish top ten.
Landon Cassill ranks 12th in the Nationwide Series Points and is only one point out of the top 10 going into the next race; which will be held in Cassill’s home state, at Iowa Speedway.
