After Manchester United beat Norwich 4-0 last weekend the media went Ryan Giggs crazy with papers naming him a possible follow up to succeed David Moyes in the United hot seat on a permanent basis. Why not? Old Trafford is now has a more upbeat atmosphere after 10 months of misery under Moyes which has ensured their lowest point tally in decades. We shouldn’t get carried away with Giggs just yet after all he’s managed United for one game against one of the leagues biggest strugglers.
To back up my point we only have to look back to the 29th October when a David Moyes led United beat the same Norwich 4-0 with a weakened team. Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata were not needed to get the goals that day as Javier Hernandez, Phil Jones and even Fabio got on the score sheet. (Yes, Fabio!) I’m not saying that the team David Moyes had was weak but there was no Rooney (until the 78th minute), no Robin van Persie, no David DeGea and no Shinji Kagawa.
Until we see what happens in the last two games of the season we must not jump to conclusions over the managerial ability of Ryan Giggs.
Also, if we look at the sides that have beaten Norwich in the Premier League this year we can include Fulham in that list and they’ve hardly had a dazzling season.
I feel that if United give Giggs the job on a permanent basis it will be more out of sentiment rather than actually seeing where he can take them.
I also hope that for the good of the club Sir Alex Ferguson keeps out of big decisions, after all look what happened with his ‘chosen one’. It didn’t help Moyes that everywhere he turned he saw signs and reminders of the great man he followed, a obvious example in the sign opposite the dugout that read ‘SIR ALEX FERGUSON STAND’ in massive red letters.
With United having a dramatic switch of fortune falling from the Champions of England to being unable to finish higher than fifth, the club needs stability. An experienced manager is required to steady the ship but with Jurgen Klopp ruling himself out of leaving Dortmund, Louis Van Gaal looks like the front runner for the job. Van Gaal would show the players who is boss in a club where player power is starting to take over. Remember this is the man who pulled down his trousers to literally show his players that he has the balls to drop players!
Whoever United bring in to succeed Moyes they will know two things: they will get a large transfer budget to revamp the club, and secondly, they won’t be given time.
