Bubba Watson Leaves No Doubt in Winning Second Masters

Bubba Watson won his second green jacket on Sunday, taking home 2014’s first major, the Masters in Augusta, Georgia.  He went into the day tied for the lead with 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, but by the time the final pair reached the back nine, this tournament was all Bubba Watson, all the time.

Watson, who was the 2012 Champion, used his unorthodox swing, and never lay up approach, to win his second Masters in just six trips to the event.  He became the seventeenth player ever to win multiple Masters, joining an elite group in the golf world.

“Small-town guy named Bubba now has two green jackets,” Watson said. “It’s pretty wild.”

Spieth holed out on the fourth hole to take an early two-shot lead on Sunday, but from there Watson dominated.  Speith went bogey-bogey on the eighth and ninth holes and by the back nine had started, Watson had built up a two shot lead. After his birdie on 13, no golfer would get within three of Bubba Watson in a final round that was much less compelling than his 2012 playoff victory.

“The first one, it was almost like I lucked into it,” Watson said as he was presented the green jacket in Butler Cabin. “This one was a lot of hard work and dedication. After giving that jacket away last year, I wanted it back.”

Spieth, who was trying to be the youngest Masters winner ever, still finishes as the youngest ever runner-up.  However that distinction doesn’t make the disappointment hurt any less.

“Obviously, I’ve worked my whole life to lead Augusta on Sunday. And although I feel like it’s very early in my career, and I’ll have more chances, it’s a stinger,” Spieth said.

Tied with Spieth for second place was Jonas Blixt of Sweden.

Overnight ratings indicate that this was the lowest ratings for a Masters since 2004.  The absence of Tiger Woods, out with back surgery, and the lack of compelling competition on the back nine probably lead to the lower than average tv numbers.
