Day 13 of the Sochi Olympics had some fantastic golden moments, but before I get into it this is what I was prepared to write while the gold medal game had about eight minutes left on the clock and Canada was down 2-0 (for a few days it will leave bitter tastes in many Canadian hockey fans mouths. Yes the Canadian women’s hockey team that has dominated for so long was dethroned by their long time rivals the United States) this is exactly what I was starting to write when the Canadian women were down 2-0 late in the third thanks to goals by Americans Meghan Duggan and Alex Carpenter, but I stopped everything when Brianne Jenner scored for Canada making it 2-1 USA.
Canada Continues to Impress in Sochi
With less than a minute ago Marie-Philip Poulin tied the game and it was off to overtime, with some weird penalties and following some three on three action, Marie-Philip Poulin scored the Golden Overtime Goal for Canada and once again the Canadian Women won gold. The nation exploded in happiness. This game is living proof that the game is only over when it’s over and as long as there is still time left to play the game is still on. It was a fantastic, exciting, dramatic hockey game, everything you want in a gold medal game. This is the fourth straight gold medal won by the Canadian women and unlike what I had writer earlier they are still on top of the throne!
As for non-hockey related Olympic news, as we don’t want to just focus on hockey. Jennifer Jones, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer and Dawn McEwen won gold in women’s curling. The Canadians went undefeated during the Olympic tournament, it was a fantastic tournament for them all around and capping it with a gold seemed just right.
Kaetlyn Osmond finished 13th in Ladies Figure Skating, but this is her first Olympics and won’t be her last, she has gained a lot of experience and a great following and many fans including yours truly, she will be a popular name in Canadian households for years to come.
Since my last article more Canadians have won medals and this is the list of our winners.
Scott Moir and Tessae Virtue won a silver medal in Ice Dancing. This competition has been very controversial with the judging and the rumors that the Americans and Russians cut a deal that would have the Americans win this event, which they did. It’s hard to know what really happened and its unfortunate if it’s the case and this should get looked into like in 2002. The other sad part is all this controversy takes away from these two fantastic athletes, they still got a medal and in our eyes they are golden.
Jan Hudec won a bronze medal in men’s Super G. Alpine skiing has not been Canada’s forte in recent games, but with the bronze medal in hand Hudec had all of us smiling.
Dominique Maltais won a silver medal in women’s Snowboard Cross, which is probably one of the most exciting events to watch in the Olympics.
Canada’s Short Track women’s team initially won a bronze in the 3000 relay, but China was disqualified and Canada was awarded silver. The team consisted of Marie-Eve Drolet, Jessica Hewitt, Valerie Maltais and Marianne St-Gelais. Another sport with some controversy with the belief that team Korea also illegally blocked Canada, I don’t know enough about the sport, but I was happy to see them medal especially with St-Gelais on the team after she fell earlier in the women’s 1000.
Canadian Mike Riddle has just won Silver in men’s freestyle ski half-pipe, these sportscoming into the Olympics that are done in the X-games are really exciting to watch I am very happy they are in the Olympics now.
The Golden Girls Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyes won a gold in women’s bobsleigh. Humphries and Moyes were able to defend the gold medal that they won in Vancouver in fine fashion coming back to beat the Americans on their fourth and final run. Humphries also stated that she will be looking into making four-women bobsled a sport in the Olympics and personally I hope she is successful, because I already thought it was in the Olympics.
We have a few more days left with a few more medal possibilities, it has been a great Olympic season and its not over yet, but so far these Olympics have been amazing and that hockey game might have been the cherry on top.
