The Los Angeles Lakers Need Kevin Love; But Can They Get Him?

Kevin Love is one of the best players in the league. He ranks amongst the top 5 power forwards in the league and he can easily be the next face of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise. Ok, but that’s no big news, right? Right. The big question for Lakers fans and everyone around the organization is how can the team acquire Kevin Love quickly thus improving its chances for a better course over the next seasons. Let’s see how that can happen.

First of all, there is no denying that there is a strong flirt between the Lakers and Love. The team doesn’t have many chances of landing other top-tier superstars, like LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony. Second-tier superstars like Luol Deng would not be a solution to the Lakers’ problems. It’s not simply about winning or losing. The Lakers, and the city of LA, needs superstars.

Los Angeles is one of the biggest markets in the entire nation. Hollywood stars, Jack Nicholson and the other wealthy people in LA who will spend their “easily-earned” dollars to watch Kobe Bryant from the front rows of the Staples Centers, certainly don’t like the team as it is now. After the legendary course the team has recorded through its history, to see the Lakers tank this season is at least weird. The Lakers need a superstar and their only realistic option at the moment is Kevin Love.

The good news is that Love has also hinted he has a desire to play in LA, or at least depart from Minnesota. Ok, don’t cheer up just yet Lakers fans. There is also a dark side in the story.

The Lakers will have to wait to land Kevin Love. The most realistic scenario at the moment wants the 25-year old superstar joining the Lakers in the summer of 2015. That’s the first time when he will be to terminate his contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. And that’s only if we see the glass half full of water instead of half empty.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are in a much better position than the Lakers at the moment. Judging from the assets each team has, the Lakers don’t seem to be able to really record a better season than the Wolves next season either. So what happens if the Wolves make it to the playoffs while the Lakers continue to sink? Will Love still be willing to leave Minnesota then?  And will his destination be the Staples Centre to play for the Lakers?

Kevin Love is certainly not happy as a member of the Timberwolves. Despite all the team’s efforts, the Wolves continue to be a mediocre team. So he would certainly want to make a fresh start in LA.

Nonetheless, for that to happen prior to the summer of 2015, the Lakers would have to agree on a trade with the Wolves. Last time we checked, Los Angeles didn’t have the assets to offer to the other side, so that they could land a superstar like Love. So, at present, Love’s acquisition prior to the summer of 2015 seems like a nice dream for Lakers fans to sleep with. Of course, whoever has another, magic solution, he could propose it here and we’ll make sure to pass it to Mitch Kupchak.
