There could not be a nicer way to begin your spring break than by reading an article about the quarterback with the laser-rocket arm, the four-time MVP, the Super Bowl winner, Peyton Manning.
“I will always be a Colt, and that will never change.” Now, although that may be figuratively true, we officially know that Peyton Manning is no longer a part of the Indianapolis Colts organization. This was made known to the public during the joint press conference that Jim Irsay, the Colts owner, and Peyton held on Wednesday afternoon. The press conference lasted approximately 30 minutes long, after which something very strange occurred, something that the NFL had never seen before: Peyton Manning, arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time, became a free agent.
As most of you who have been following this whole Peyton Manning ordeal may already know, the four-time MVP has been subject to four neck surgeries throughout the course of the last two years. Obviously, as a free agent, that is going to be a big red flag for teams who may want to go after this all-pro quarterback. Even still, reports are being leaked that numerous, about twelve, teams have sought out to acquire Peyton. One of the teams being the New York Jets.
Three years ago, the Jets drafted a quarterback out of USC named Mark Sanchez. And during his first two seasons, Mark led the Jets to the playoffs. Unfortunately, last year, due to a multitude of mediocre performances by Mark himself, the New York Jets did not make the playoffs. Mark has been seen as a very inconsistent quarterback during his early NFL career and whispers are coming out of New York that they may want a quarterback change. What better quarterback to switch to than the man himself, Super Bowl winner, Peyton Manning.
Manning does have some ties to New York, with the obvious tie of course being the fact that his brother Eli is currently the quarterback for the New York Giants. Also, long time Colt offensive coordinator Tom Moore, is currently the senior offensive assistant/offensive consultant for the New York Jets. Would New York be big enough for two Mannings?
Logically speaking of course, Eli would probably welcome Manning to New York with open arms as this would unite the brothers in one state instead of the family being separated throughout all of America. Newspaper wise, this Manning duo would “blow the roof off the place.” The media would salivate at the thought about creating articles about Eli & Peyton Manning. Rex Ryan, coach of the Jets, welcomes the idea of bringing in Manning and word is out of the Jets’ locker room that the players would not mind the switch either.
Today, Friday March 9th, reports are saying Peyton is visiting with the Denver Broncos as Peyton is close with John Elway and would like to begin this process by visiting with someone who he knows. I believe it is only a matter of time before the Jets’ organization decides to schedule a meeting with Manning and if all goes well in the “Big Apple”, we may soon find out if New York is big enough for both Peyton and Eli Manning.
