The Washington Valor have signed quarterback Erik Meyer to their roster. Meyer last played with the San Jose Sabercats. He led the team to a 17-1 record and a win in ArenaBowl XXVIII in 2015. In 2013, he was named the Arena Football League MVP. He also won Offensive Player of the Year in 2013.

“I’m excited to play for the Valor,” Meyer said during a press conference. “I can’t wait to be back on the field and play for this franchise. The season can’t come soon enough.”
Shortly after the Sabercats beat the Jacksonville Sharks in ArenaBowl XXVIII in 2015, the team announced they were folding, which meant Meyer was out of a job.
Meyer has played with several other AFL teams. He was first assigned to the Spokane Shock in 2009. After a year with the Utah Blaze in 2010, he returned to the Shock in 2011. He set franchise records in touchdowns (112) and passing yards (4,667) that season.
Prior to playing for the Shock and Blaze, Meyer spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders of the NFL. He also played with the Cologne Centurions in NFL Europa.
Head coach Dean Cokinos is also happy to have Meyers as a member of the team.
“This is a key acquisition for the Valor as the quarterback is vital to your success in the AFL,” he said during a separate press conference “Erik will be a tremendous fit for our style of play and he will also be a great ambassador of the arena game to the Washington D.C. community. We are very excited to have Erik on board with us as we build the Valor brand.”
Meyer and the Valor will open the 2017 season against the Baltimore Brigade at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C on April 7. Both teams will be playing their seasons as a franchise. They were both founded by president of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, Ted Leonsis.
