Buccaneers Sign Peyton Hillis

The Tampa Buccaneers have added running back Peyton Hillis to their backfield, inking the one time Madden coverboy to a 1 year deal.  Hillis spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hillis has played for the Broncos, Browns, and Chiefs, over his 5 year NFL career.  It has largely been a journeyman’s career with the exception of an outstanding 2010 season for the Browns which earned him the cover spot on the 2011 version of the popular Madden NFL football game from EA Sports.  Hillis put up 1,177 yards on 270 carries and added 477 yards on 61 catches for the Browns that year.  He also added 11 rushing touchdowns and 2 recieving touchdowns in what was by far his best season.   Hillis has been unable to come close to that production since.

Hillis is expected to battle 2012 seventh-round pick Michael Smith and 2013 sixth-round pick Mike James for the backup running back spot in Tampa Bay behind incumbent starter Doug Martin.  The Bucs had little depth at the backup running back position after trading LaGarrette Blount to the New England Patriots during the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hillis’ one year deal is for the NFL veteran minimum.
