Derek Jeter’s return to the New York Yankee lineup was short-lived. After injuring his quad in his 3rd at bat of the season, Jeter finds himself back on the 15 day DL as the Yankees made the move, retroactive to July 12th.
Jeter went 1 for 4 in his season debut on July 11th vs the Kansas City Royals after missing the first 91 games of the regular season due to recovery from the fractured ankle he suffered in the American League Championship Series, and re-aggravated in spring training. With Jeter back on the shelf, the Yankees will again turn to Eduardo Nunez to man their lineup at short stop.
The injury is said to be a grade 1 quad strain, which is the least serious form of strain, and Jeter is eligible to return to the lineup on July 27th. However, given his age, 39, it remains to be seen if he will be ready that quickly.
The Yankees have recalled utility infielder Brent Lillibridge to fill Jeter’s spot on the Major League Roster.
The Yankees enter second half action in fourth place in the AL East, six games behind the Boston Red Sox. The two teams begin a three-game series at Fenway Park on Friday night.
