Edwin Encarnacion, the Toronto Blue Jays star designated hitter, is being sued for battery this week by an unnamed 24-year-old woman. The victim claims that she had unprotected sex with the slugger in February of 2016. She also says that even though Encarnacion knew he carried STDs, he chose to forgo protection and willingly transmitted them to her. The suit that has been filed is seeking $11.5 million in reparations. Edwin is currently in the last year of his three year, $29 million contract.
The woman apparently also had relations with another player on the Blue Jays squad a year ago (as is reported in the lawsuit’s statement). She is insistent that Encarnacion transmitted two of the unnamed diseases while on a trip to the Dominican Republic. Supposedly the star player refuted these claims, suggesting she acquired them while four wheeling or when she swam in the river near Punta Cana.

The woman rebukes these claims, stating that she was tested in late 2015 and was clear of any infections. Then, after their romantic weekend in the Dominican Republic, she began experiencing pain. She initially thought she had contracted the Zika virus. After visiting a doctor she learned she instead had multiple sexually transmitted diseases. She also claims that Edwin lessened his initial denial of carrying STDs, but then ceased to contact her completely.
Depending on how serious the infection is, this suit could be one that genuinely hurts Encarnacion. Most suits that involve STD transmission don’t incur large amounts of money and are easily dealt with. However, if the diseases are incurable, such as herpes and other genital warts, or potentially fatal; Encarnacion could be facing a serious scandal with large consequences. Encarnacion and his agent have yet to make a statement regarding the lawsuit. Time will tell whether one of the Blue Jays’ star men can clear his name.
