Patrick Roy Resigns From Colorado Avalanche

Multiple sources are reporting that former head coach Patrick Roy resigned from Colorado Avalanche effective immediately.

Patrick Roy resigns from Colorado Avalanche

Roy, 50, completed his third season with the Avalanche and compiled a 130-92-24 record, good for a .577% winning percentage.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion is considered one the best goalies in NHL history. He famously demanded a trade from the Montreal Canadiens after head coach Mario Tremblay left Roy in during a blowout against the Detroit Red Wings on December 2, 1995. Roy alleged it was to embarrass him. Days later Roy would be traded to Colorado where he would win the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.

Owner and coach in the QMJHL

After a 19-year career, Roy retired from the NHL in 2003 and coached the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts from 2006 through the 2013 campaign. Roy had bought the franchise back in 1997 from Jurg Staubli. He guided the Remparts to a 349-159-37 record, and won the 2006 Memorial Cup. Roy is most famously known the line brawl in a QMJHL playoff game against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Roy allegedly gestured to his son, Jonathan, to engage in fisticuffs with the Sagueneens netminder.

Roy has been known for his hot temper and letting his emotions get the better of him in tense situations. There is no word yet on the reason for the abrupt departure from the Avalanche. Stay tuned to Lastwordonsports.com for more information as the situation develops.

Update: It now appears that Roy and the Avalanche front office had a different opinion of the players needs for Colorado to return to the playoffs. According to Frank Seravalli’s tweet below, Roy said that this is not happening via a statement released after the news broke of his resignation.
