Was Sunday Night the Spark the Cubs Needed?

After a great start to the season, the Cubs have been slumping since about June 20. Was Sunday night the spark the Cubs needed to snap out of it?

On June 20, the Chicago Cubs started the slump that everyone saw coming.  It was the highly dreaded slump that a team must enter after starting the season so well.  It got to the point where many fans had thoughts that they may not be as good as everyone thought they were.

On July 27, 2015, Kris Bryant hit a game winning three-run home run to left center at Wrigley Field. The season turned around for the Cubs at that moment, and they were ready to face the push for the playoffs. There was no turning back from there!

Was Sunday Night the Spark the Cubs Needed?

Fast forward to Sunday night.

The Cubs brought up Brian Matusz to pitch for them on the nationally televised game against the Seattle Mariners. From the start of the game, some people thought the game already was practically over. Who could blame them after Matusz gave up three two-run home runs in the first three inning?

In the fourth inning, the score sat at 6-0 and manager Joe Maddon made the call to his bullpen. The ‘pen did its job and shut out the Mariners for the remainder of the night.  The Cubs scored three runs before the final frame, so the score was 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth. Then the fun started.

The Cubs got two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a single and a fielder’s choice, and then picked up the tying run on a wild pitch which scored Addison Russell.

Things settled down quiet until the twelfth inning. Then, with Jason Heyward on third, pitcher Jon Lester came to the plate. Lester bunted and Heyward motored his way into home plate before the tag could be applied. The Cubs won the ball game by a final scored of 7-6.

If you are a Cubs fan, this is one of the games you’re going to remember for a very long time.  After being down 6-0, they came back to win it in wild fashion in twelve innings on national television.

The Cubs have said multiple times this year that they “never give up” and last night, without any doubt, was the perfect example of never giving up.

As stated earlier, the Cubs have been in a mid-season slump for the past month and a half. That one, crazy moment might be just the spark the team needed to break out of the slump and heat up for September.
