Ever since Brock Lesnar ended The Undertaker‘s undefeated WrestleMania streak, “The Beast Incarnate” has gone unpinned. Despite having feuds with the likes of John Cena, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and The Undertaker himself, Lesnar has yet to lose a match cleanly. Whoever manages to do so will inherit the heat of breaking the streak. They will instantly become a top talent and be elevated to the main event. Many people have predicted that Roman Reigns will be the one to pin Lesnar, but with the drug test controversy and the continued rejection of the crowd, that is beginning to feel less and less likely.
Finn Bálor Should Defeat Brock Lesnar
When Finn Bálor made his main roster debut last week, the WWE made it clear that he’s destined for stardom. Not only did Bálor earn a Universal Championship match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, he did so by pinning Rusev and Reigns in the same night. Rusev and Roman Reigns are two big stars. Having Bálor defeat them on his first Monday Night Raw is a big deal.
Whoever beats Lesnar will immediately become a huge star, so the WWE should save it for a superstar who needs it. The man who defeats Brock Lesnar should be a young star they can build around for years. Roman Reigns has been in the last two WrestleMania main events. Dean Ambrose is the current WWE World Champion, and Seth Rollins has been the main event for the WWE since splitting from The Shield. Fellow NXT graduate Baron Corbin is a polarizing wrestler. He is still very green, but has a lot going for him. He’s got a certain presence and size, not to mention an awesome finisher, so he’ll get his push.
History and Credibility
Despite an incredible indy following the longest NXT Championship reign in history, Finn Bálor might need help down the road. He’s only 5’11 and 190 pounds, he doesn’t speak well, and even WWE legends are speaking out about his credibility. There’s a very good chance that Bálor will defeat Rollins at SummerSlam to become the very first Universal Champion. It will be Bálor’s first pay per view, and there’s a good chance that Demon Bálor will make his main roster debut. Having Bálor’s demon persona lose it’s first match would rob it’s magic and ultimately hurt his push.
Winning a world championship in his first pay per view is an incredible push, but it puts Bálor in an uncomfortable situation. Not only is he a world champion less than a month after debuting, he’s holding a title without a history. The WWE haven’t dug up the World Heavyweight Championship or any belt with a hundred years of history, they invented a new belt. Putting a brand new belt on someone that the casual audience doesn’t know well that doesn’t speak well could end badly. Ultimately, Bálor’s first title reign could be an absolute disaster.
Balor Club
There’s also a chance that Bálor will re-form part of the original Bullet Club with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson on Raw. This would get over with the hardcore crowd. However, it might lose steam with the casual audience ala the WWE’s version of the NWO. Ultimately, Bálor’s size and character might not be enough. If he is going to be a main eventer for the WWE, he’ll need an iconic moment.
If Finn Bálor was able to pin Brock Lesnar, he would be a made man in the WWE. By defeating the man who defeated the Undertaker at WrestleMania, he would be elevated to that level. Even at 35 years old, Bálor could potentially have a ten year or longer career in the WWE. There could be something absolutely terrifying about wrestling the demon at WrestleMania, much like there was with the Undertaker.
Seth Rollins doesn’t need to beat Brock Lesnar. Roman Reigns doesn’t need to beat Brock Lesnar. Dean Ambrose doesn’t need to beat Brock Lesnar. But down the road, Finn Bálor just might, and the WWE should pull the trigger.
