Garrett Rank and Adam Hadwin Carry the Flag at Canadian Open

While everyone is looking forward to Jared du Toit playing this afternoon, with a chance to win the RBC Canadian Open, two other Canadians were also playing on Sunday. Going off earlier in the day were amateur Garrett Rank, and professional Adam Hadwin.

Rank, who golfs part-time, in addition to his job as an NHL linesman, talked about his week at the Canadian Open as well as watching countryman du Toit climb the leaderboard.

“Its really cool to be playing at home in our national open. I’m just really excited to play the weekend. Definitely a memory for a lifetime, that’s for sure.”\

Rank finished with a four over 76, to finish eight-over for the tournament and in 77th place.

“I played all right, my short game kind of got exposed today. Gave myself a few chances to make birdies and I couldn’t convert, hit a few bad chip shots. I was happy with how I played, but disappointed with the result. I don’t do this for a living, so it was like found money for me playing on the weekend.”

On du Toit

“I played with (du Toit) the first two days and he was playing unbelievable and putting so well. There is no reason why he can’t play well today, and I hope he has fun with it today. The whole country is going to be playing with him. I hope he does well and it would be really, really cool to see him win.”

Adam Hadwin

Hadwin closed with a one-under par 71 to finish at 1-under for the tournament and a tie for fiftieth. He talked about the added pressure and incredible fan support in Canada. He also talked about conditions at Glen Abbey setting up for some low scores this afternoon.

“It’s a disappointing week, you want to come here to Canada and play well.  I had my moments of brilliance, and I had my moments of maybe I should be an amateur again. I played a little bit better on the back nine today, which was nice. Started hitting better shots, and it was nice to make some putts there at the end.”

On the added pressure in Canada. “Of course there is. Not a day goes by, not a minute goes by that the media doesn’t mention it to us that we haven’t won yet. So, um when you constantly have people telling you and reminding you of the fact that we haven’t won in 62 years now, yes there is an added pressure. But, its also so fun to play in front of the fans. They are so good, they are so supportive. They really just want to see you do well at the end of the day. Yeah there is some added pressure.”

Conditions

“It’s softening up a lot. I think the greens have slowed down a lot. There are some good pin locations. A couple guys went out early and shot 63. There is not a lot of breeze. I think you are going to have to shoot a number today to win.”
