The Colorado Avalanche have signed centre Nathan MacKinnon to a seven-year contract extension. The deal begins for the 2016-17 season, and is worth $44.1 million. The contract carries an AAV or cap hit of $6.3 million per season. MacKinnon had just completed his three-year entry-level contract and was a restricted free agent.

Colorado Avalanche Sign Nathan MacKinnon to a Contract Extension
The Avalanche drafted MacKinnon with the first overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft. He would make the team immediately, and scored 63 points as an NHL rookie. The performance was enough to win him the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. He was also named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team.
This season, MacKinnon put up 21 goals and 31 assists for 52 points in 71 games. The Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia native was third in scoring on the Avalanche. MacKinnon has 59 goals and 94 assists for 153 points in 218 career NHL games over three seasons.
“Signing Nathan to a long-term contract was a priority this offseason,” Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic told NHL.com. “He is going to be a key part of our team for many years to come and it was important to secure his rights moving forward.”
