The Montreal Canadiens have announced they have signed goaltender Al Montoya to a one year deal worth $950,000 per season.

Montoya, 31, spent the past two seasons backing up Roberto Luongo on the Florida Panthers. Montoya posted a 12-7-3 record, a 2.18 goals against average and a .919 save percentage in 25 games during the 2015-16 campaign. Al Montoya has played for the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, and Winnipeg Jets throughout his career.
It’s likely Montreal was looking for a long term goalie in preparation for the Expansion Draft, and just in case Carey Price goes down again so the Habs don’t have to look for someone to compliment Mike Condon again. It is unknown if Montoya is on a two-way deal yet, which if not, it could mean Mike Condon going back to the American Hockey League.
