Turkish giants Galatasaray have failed in their appeal on being banned from playing in Europe by UEFA, reports BBC Sport.
The Istanbul side qualified for the 2016/17 Europa League after winning the Super Kupa last season; but they have been suspended from playing in Europe by UEFA. Galatasaray were accused of falling foul of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. This was the clubs second offence, and as a result a UEFA ban was enforced.
Galatarasay Fail In Appeal On UEFA Ban
An appeal against the ban was taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but this was dismissed.
Osmanlispor will now replace Galatasaray in the Europa League next season after finishing in fifth place last season in the Turkish Super Lig.
It is the second time in three seasons the 20-time Turkish champions have broken the FFP regulations. They were issued with a €200,000 fine in 2014 by UEFA and told they had to get their wage bill down in order to break even and were given a three-year period to complete this.
Galatasaray aren’t the first club from Turkey to be served with a European ban. In May 2012 both Besiktas and Bursaspor were both banned because of financial irregularities.
The Gala had been a regular fixture in the Champions League and had qualified for the competition for the past four seasons. They went out at the group stage in their most recent campaign.
They finished third in the group which allowed them into the Europa League but they were knocked out by Italian side Lazio in the last 32.
