Welcome back to Quick Slant, the column that sorts through hundreds of headlines and brings you only the best, most interesting and downright stupid the NFL has to offer. The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines; some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid. It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day. I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels! So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:
First, condolences go out to the Butler and Sauer families. Steelers Hall of Fame cornerback Jack Butler, and Jets wide receiver George Sauer have both passed away this past week.
After 25 years as CEO of the Oakland Raiders, Amy Trask has decided to part ways with the club. I’d love to say something positive about her time in Oakland (and LA) but have you seen the Raiders over that same 25 years? I’ll be kind and just not say anything. Move on, Amy…… Wisely, Doug Marrone of the Buffalo Bills is being very cautious in judging the talent of QB EJ Manuel. “Judging talent” and “Buffalo Bills” have not exactly gone hand-in-hand in the past several years decade…… Geno Smith, never having played a down in the NFL, has been getting a lot of scrutiny directed at him lately. My advice to him – carry around some 8.5 X 11’s of both Tebow and Sanchez and when anyone barks at you just hold them up high and say “See these guys? Yeah. Shut up”……Big props (is that still used?) go out to the Jaguars Fan Club “Bold City Brigade” for their new website called EvenIfHesReleased.com. The website is completely dedicated to prevent the team from making the gigantic mistake of signing Tebow. That’s taking the bull by the horns, and good on them!……Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins has gone on record clarifying the team’s position that it will “never change its name”. The team is under scrutiny by many groups for what they believe is offensive to Native Americans. The name “Redtails” has been offered as an option. Interestingly, only 11% of people in a poll felt the name was inappropriate. We have requested an interview with the company behind the poll to ascertain how many polled are actually from the native population in the US, but haven’t heard back until this point……I’ll leave you with news that both borders on the insane, OJ Simpson has claimed his lawyer botched his case in which he was found guilty of stealing his own memorabilia. For whatever reason, he’s being heard in court this week and may in fact be granted a new trial. At some point, should we not strip him of his rights as a part of the human race?
