Ana Ivanovic became the latest seed to go out of the French Open 2016. The Serbian found herself down a break right at the start as she dropped serve.
Ana Ivanovic Latest Seed to Fall at the French Open
Elina Svitolina is only slightly lower ranked than Ivanovic and the Ukrainian was not going to be easy for the Serb, despite the Ivanovic leading the head to head comfortably. This proved the case as the second game of the match was a very long affair, and ended when Svitolina handed the break back with a double fault.
The next couple of games the players again exchanged breaks, with the Serb double faulting to hand the break back, before earning it straight back again the very next game. This continued until game ten when the Ukrainian finally managed to hold serve to take the set 6-4.
At the start of the second set Ivanovic found herself in trouble early, dropping serve to Svitolina. The Ukrainian then consolidated the break, so the pattern of the first set would not be immediately repeated. This was certainly true as the Ivanovic then held to love on her next service game.
Once again the ladies exchanged service breaks over the next few games, until once again Svitolina stands firm and breaks in game nine. Svitolina is now on the verge of a major upset in the third round and only needed to hold serve and her nerve to make it through to the next round.
The Ukrainian did just that, and knocked out the 14th seed in straight sets. This marked the first win over the Ivanovic for Svitolina in eight attempts, the last time Ivanovic lost a set to the Ukrainian was back in 2014 at Indian Wells.
The two players have never met on grass yet, and scoring a huge win over the Serbian in the last major clay event of the year can only build the confidence of Svitolina going into the grass season.
