Robert Griffin III Signs With the Browns

Robert Griffin III has signed a two-year deal with the Cleveland Browns to fill their quarterback spot as reported by Adam Schefter.

Robert Griffin III Signs With the Browns

The Browns were on the lookout for a quarterback after parting ways with 2014 first-round pick Johnny Manziel. Manziel got a lot negative media attention as he was spotted drinking at a variety of parties even after he attended an alcohol rehab. Manziel’s lack of production on the field combined with his antics off the field made it a logical move to release him.

Griffin, the former second overall pick, came into the league very highly touted as the Washington Redskins traded up to draft him. Washington gave up three first-round picks and a second-round pick to draft Griffin in hopes that he could be a cornerstone of their franchise. This however did not happen.

In Griffin’s first year during the 2012 season, the trade appeared to be a good one. He passed for 20 touchdowns and ran for seven. He also passed for 3,200 yards and added 815 yards by running the ball. He brought Washington to the playoffs where he injured his knee while also falling to the Seattle Seahawks 24-14 in the NFC Wild Card game.

While 2013 wasn’t a terrible season for Griffin, interceptions started to become a problem. He had 12 interceptions in 13 games compared to five in 15 games in 2012. His running game also hit a roadblock as he had 489 yards in 2013 compared to 815 yards in 2012.

Griffin’s playing time in 2014 was held to 9 games as injuries and poor play led to less game time action. Griffin was benched at times for backups Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.

Cousins became a staple for Washington’s team during the 2015 season. More injuries and Cousin’s superb play prevented Griffin from getting any playing time.

While Griffin may not presently be a top quarterback choice, Cleveland will hope he can rediscover some of the success that he had early on in his career.
