Janoris Jenkins Signs With New York Giants

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins is expected to sign a five-year, $62.5 million contract with the New York Giants. His new contract keeps him with the team until 2020. Jenkins spent the first four years of his career with the St. Louis–and now currently Los Angeles–Rams.

Jenkins played and started in 15 games for the Rams in 2015 and had a spectacular season. Despite missing only one game, he concluded the year with 64 tackles, three interceptions, 15 passes defensed and one forced fumble (both career highs). His aggressive style and respected man-to-man coverage skills are important pluses. Jenkins and Pro Bowl Snub Trumaine Johnson quietly developed into a respectable corner tandem. Combining for 10 of St. Louis’s 13 interceptions this season, the pair was a large bright spot for the defense. Pro Football Focus awarded their joint efforts by rating them both top 25 cornerbacks for the campaign. A franchise that has become known for its ferocious defensive line in recent years, Jenkins and Johnson proved that the Rams can definitely defend the perimeter as well.

Jenkins immediately made an impact as a rookie for the Rams. Along with his 14 passes defensed, he set career marks in tackles (73), interceptions (4) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (3). His scoring efforts in 2012 tied the NFL rookie record for most picks returned for scores in a season. His four defensive touchdowns (three interceptions, one fumble recovery) led the NFL that season. After putting forth a combined 120 tackles and three interceptions from 2013-2014, Jenkins placed himself in prime position to become a well-paid man.

Four hours away from his future alma mater in Gainesville, Jenkins was born in Pahokee, Florida. Attending the city’s high school, he was named a first-team Class 2B all-state selection as a senior in 2008. Jenkins accepted a scholarship to the University of Florida and played under Urban Meyer from 2008-2010. After a couple of run-ins with the law, Jenkins was kicked off the team and subsequently transferred to the University of North Alabama. His collegiate career features All-SEC and All-American selections, an SEC Championship and a BCS National Championship. Jenkins was selected in round two (39th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Rams.
